"To God Almighty how much we do does not matter, but how much love we put in that action. How much we do to Him in the person that we are serving. And let us all meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love." — Mother Teresa

A Solo Show in Honor of Caroline Thompson
Artist Reception: Saturday, September 11, 2010, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
free and open to the public
Music by Laurie Dameron

Stax is a solo show sponsored by the Art Committee at St. John’s in honor of Caroline Thompson. Over the last five years, Caroline, as curator, has showcased many local and regional artists and generously given of her time and talent to promote them. This is the first time Caroline’s work has been exhibited in a featured show at the gallery. The public can view the exhibit between July and September and meet the artist at a public reception on September 11, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.. Laurie Dameron, singer-songwriter, will provide music for the event.
In 2005, George and Caroline Thompson became the prime movers behind the gallery. George contributed the lighting, helped hang shows, ran errands, anchored receptions, painted walls. Caroline did all of the above in addition to becoming the gallery curator. She pulled a team of art enthusiasts together to provide support and guidance for gallery activities and alerted Boulder’s art community that a new venue was available to them. After years of service, Caroline is stepping down as curator and stepping up her studio time. George, a passionate hiker, is also turning in his gallery keys and hammer. He is proud of the gallery, but feels his mission was to help jumpstart the program: “The St. John’s Art Gallery is a wonderful outreach service provided by the Church to the Boulder Community. It is one of the very few places where up and coming local and regional artists have an opportunity to display their work to the public.”
Caroline’s new collection, Stax, is a diverse fusion of abstract canvases. The three-dimensional pieces, a harmonic convergence of angles and color, have a sculptural quality. Caroline says the idea emerged last winter when she placed two canvases side by side to dry: “Although the two were different in color, shape, and design, at that moment, they became ONE. “ That whimsical moment of artistic insight launched hours of work and experimentation that eventually became the Stax collection. For Caroline, each piece is “a puzzle created out of different pieces of art to form a distinctive expression of unity.” Her work really is as playful and compelling as a game of chess. Using only the imagination, the observer wants to stack and re-stack the canvases before concluding that each piece is a perfect convergence of elements Having a splendid color pallet and an eye for design, Caroline has moved into a new realm of abstraction with 3D canvases merged in artfully arranged angles. The colorful, sculptural quality of her work demands spacious contemporary backdrops in minimalist spaces.
