"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as your self.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. — Matthew 22:36-40

Father Rol

"We invite you to get to know us by joining us in worship, newcomer coffees and brunches, Sunday morning coffee hour, and any lay ministry you feel called to join. Most of all, we welcome you to the St. John's family, and we look forward to getting to know you."

Father Rol has been rector of St. John's Church since 1991. He was previously rector of Church of the Good Shepherd in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and an assistant priest here at St. John's. A native of western New York, Rol has lived in Colorado since his undergrad days at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He completed his seminary studies at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. In his previous life, Rol ran a local bicycle shop called 'The Spoke.' He and his wife Bea have three grown children and three grandchildren.

Reverend Andy

"With humor and respect for people of all faiths, we find our way in the world. With strong commitment to peace and social justice, the church maintains its purpose. If we are infused with the sacrificial love of Jesus and led by the wild wind of the spirit and God our creator, we can make the world a better place."

Ordained an Episcopal Deacon and Priest in 1997, Andy is also an ordained Elder (1947) and Pastor (1954) in the Presbyterian Church, USA.

His duties at St. John's include pastoral care at hospitals and homes, leading worship and Bible study on Wednesdays and Sundays, and officiating at funerals and other services as needed. He is also a recent past member of the Board of Trustees for the Colorado Episcopal Foundation, which helps coordinate stewardship and loan services for the 120 churches in our diocese.

Andy is married to Jinny Carhartt, a graduate of Education For Ministry. She is a member of the Chancel Choir and Daughters of the King. Jinny helps with the children's music during Children's Chapel and participates with Andy in the diocesan conventions each year. They have five grown children.

The Carhartts have participated in the life of the Presbyterian Church, USA for over 50 years and have been at St. John's since 1991.

Deacon Pat

"St. John's provides a spiritual and formational base from which we can go out into the world to serve others. As we reach out to others, we soon discover that we receive much more than we are able to give."

Deacon Pat has been a member of St. John's since 1986 and she has served as a vocational deacon since 1994. She studied at Iliff School of Theology and St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado, graduating from St. Thomas in 1994. Her work at St. John's combines Contemplation and Social Justice. She currently facilitates and teaches Centering Prayer, is a facilitator in the JustFaith II program, and through Caribbean Outreach, helps to develop relationships with the Episcopal Church in Cuba and in Haiti.

Pat and her husband, Antonio, have also been in the restaurant business here in Boulder over the past 19 years. The new 'L' Laudisio Restaurant opened on 29th Street on Oct.13, 2006. Their two adult children, Tavio and Lucia, work there full time and their 6 month old grandson, Nio, is already touring the dining room.

Rev. Gayle

Gayle arrived at St. John's June 12, 2001. She's a retired priest from the Diocese of Southwest Florida where she served at St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Sarasota 1992 until 1998 when she retired from full-time parochial ministry to do presentations on spirituality of aging for the Alban Institute and workshops in various dioceses on end-of-life issues. Prior to that, she served as associate rector at St. Matthew's in Evanston, Illinois.

Gayle and her husband, Bill, moved to Colorado in June 2001 to be nearer three of their seven children. She says, "It's who you know, not what you know," to explain her employment at St. John's. Her son, Erik Hartronft was architect for the expansion of St. John's parish hall and church school. Through him, she met Rol who asked her to fill in for him while he went on sabbatical that year. She has continued to serve on the staff, primarily doing pastoral work. With the employment of a full-time associate rector, Gayle eased out of her responsibilities at St. John's. She has trained two classes of pastoring ministers and continues to celebrate, preach and assist as needed. We are blessed to have Gayle with us at St. John's.

Father Jim

The Reverend James McKeown ("Father Jim") is Priest Emeritus at St. John's who assists with preaching, presiding, and Bible study, retired from St. John's in 1991 after twenty six years of service here.

The Reverend Robert Hatch ("Bishop Hatch") is a retired bishop who has recently moved to Boulder. He served as the fourth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts from 1957 to 1970. We are delighted that he is a part of our parish and look forward to him being an advisor to the St. John's clergy
