"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as your self.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. — Matthew 22:36-40

It’s Sunday morning and, after arriving a few minutes early, you find yourself sitting quietly in church listening to the choir practice before the service begins. You marvel at the amazing building you are sitting in: the beautiful reredos behind the altar depicting the four gospels, the magnificent organ that so perfectly complements the chancel, the stained glass windows sparkling in the morning sun high above the nave.
You are nudged gently out of your reverie when you notice that the choir has begun to sing one of your favorite hymns. You quietly meet the song with you own voice as the human element of this church enters your awareness. You open your eyes to those other early risers in the pews around you, to the organist, to each individual member of the choir, to the acolytes preparing for the service.
As the ushers escort the new arrivals in, the pews begin to fill and your imagination takes you back to Sunday mornings from long ago. You find yourself wondering about the faithful men and women who started St. John’s, the folks who had the vision to build this beautiful worship space in 1903 and all of the faithful souls who worked without rest and without haste to keep that vision alive and thriving for over one hundred years.
And now you are part of that vision as you prepare to share in the liturgy that binds you so directly to the community of saints that built such a strong foundation of faith at St. John’s. That liturgy binds you to each and every person in church with you on Sunday, to each and every person participating in the ritual of communion around the globe, to each and every person praying for peace and working for justice as followers of Jesus.
Your generous gift to St. John’s will not only help preserve the rich history of this amazing church, but will also prepare the way for St. John’s thriving future. Make your pledge today and you will help ensure that St. John’s will be a sacred place where people can build on faith and grow in spirit for generations to come.
