THOMAS EDWARD MORGAN, Music Director is recognized as a significant choral conductor and composer in the state of Colorado. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music summa cum laude from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and the Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Colorado. Morgan currently holds a continuing fellowship in the Lucas Artists Program at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California. This prestigious fellowship is awarded by invitation only. During the fellowship, Morgan is collaborating with New York visual and performance artist Lesley Dill in the creation of an opera based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson. He is the founding Artistic Director of the nationally recognized Ars Nova Singers, a 40-voice semi-professional ensemble specializing in the performance of ancient and modern music for unaccompanied voices. In its history, Ars Nova Singers has presented over 250 performances of more than 100 different concert programs, and has released nine independent recordings on compact disc, and performed on seven internationally released recordings with Boulder composer and instrumentalist Bill Douglas.
Principal Organist BRIAN DU FRESNE’s career as a professional musician began when he obtained his first organist position at a church in England when he was fourteen years old. Brian attended high schools in London, Munich and Naples, and attended the University of Texas at El Paso where he received his Bachelor and Masters degrees in piano performance. Brian earned a second Masters degree in Music Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Brian currently holds the position of Vocal Music Director at Monarch High School in Superior, Colorado, where he directs five choirs and teaches music theory, guitar, electronic music, a performance class and directs the annual Spring musical. He was on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Music Educator’s Association and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Colorado All State Choir. In 1996, Brian was selected for the position of Organist at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder, serving with Thomas Edward Morgan as Music Director. Brian is preparing for special certification with the American Guild of Organists.
Assistant Organist Tony Lee has had a career spanning 46 years as organist, church musician and composer. At the College of Church Musicians, Washington National Cathedral, he studied composition and analysis under Leo Sowerby, organ under Preston Rockholt, and conducting under Paul Callaway. He is a Fellow of the College of Church Musicians and an Associate of the American Guild of Organists.
As organist, Mr. Lee has served parishes in Maryland and Colorado. He was organist/choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal, Boulder, from 1968-1970, and organist at St Aidan’s Episcopal from 1971-2004. Since 1986, he has been accompanist with Boulder’s Ars Nova Singers under the direction of Thomas Morgan, and since 2005, accompanist with Boulder Chorale under the direction of Timothy Snyder. Since his retirement from St. Aidan’s, he has “come back home” to St John’s as associate organist.
