Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. — 1 Corinthians 12.4-7

Spiritual formation, sometimes called faith formation or the Christian journey, is the process by which a person grows and develops a deep comfort level with personal beliefs, faith or a sense of purpose. It implies an effort to imitate Christ and obey his twofold command: love of God and love of neighbor as oneself.
The concept is an ancient one and comes to us through religious orders in which members are guided by spiritual directors and prescribed devotions along a pathway. For others, the formation process tends to coincide with a general human and religious awareness of realism and the need for self-control, and an appreciation of the mysteries of God and life.
Spiritual formation is the focus of the following programs at St. John’s: Centering Prayer, Education for Ministry, Just Faith I and II, Bible study (how to apply one’s faith and values, living in the fullness of God’s presence in one’s life), The Spirituality Group (which is akin to group spiritual direction), individual spiritual direction, Cursillo, Inquirer’s Class and Youth Inquirer’s Class, Book Discussion Groups – Burning Books, Non-Burning Books, Standing Discernment Group, Via Media, our class on spirituality for those with Alzheimer’s, and our youth, young adult, children, and family ministries.
