Frequently Asked Questions

My child is at an age where there are two options available. What is the best option for my child?
This is absolutely a decision that you and your child should make together. Read over the information provided on this website; consult the booklet A Guide to Family Ministry and Education for Children and Youth, and talk with the Director of Faith Formation. You may want to allow your child to experience each available option so that together you can discern the best fit for your child!

Do I have to register my child?
We do ask that families complete a registration form each year (either hard copy or online) so that our records and contact information are up to date. Registering your child helps us to get to know your family better and gives us important information about your child, including any information like allergies and special needs, as well as emergency contact information.

Does my child have to stay in one option or the other all year?
Your child is free to move between options during the school year, however, your child will get the most out of their Sunday school experience by sticking with one program.

Can my child switch between Sunday School options during class on Sundays?
If your child is trying out different Sunday School options, they will stay in one option for the duration of that Sunday's class. The following Sunday they may try out a different option.

Do I have to volunteer?
Volunteering is optional, of course, but our programs cannot happen without the help of our wonderful parents. We suggest that parents volunteer in our classrooms on Sunday mornings at least once per semester per child and that they choose to support at least one other special event throughout the year. The benefits of volunteering are many -- to both you and your child; please consider giving the gift of your time and talent to our family ministry program.

What if my family can't attend church and Sunday School every Sunday?
We understand that folks may have trouble making it each Sunday and, well, that's life! Like anything else, though, regular attendance will ensure that you and your child get the most out of our programs.

What's the inclement weather policy?
If inclement weather (snow, ice, flood) has you guessing whether our Sunday Morning Faith Formation programs are canceled, please check the St. John's website and Facebook page to confirm. We list any cancellation by 7:30 a.m. on the day in question. We do our absolute best to ensure that there is always something for children on Sunday mornings, even if the weather is bad.

What is your drop-in policy?
Do you bring want to bring a friend with you to Sunday school? Are your neighbors are looking for a spiritual home, and do they want to try out St. John's with you? We welcome visitors to all of our programs! We will ask parents to sign their children in and out, to give us an emergency contact number, and to fill out a registration form by their second visit.

My child is on the cusp of being able to move up to Level II or Level III of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, or to the youth program. How do I know when it's time?
Discuss your concern with your child's catechists and with the director of faith formation. We'll work together to ensure the best possible placement for your child.
