Sunday Morning Programs
Newcomers and visitors are always welcome!
Parents register their children each year for Sunday morning programs, prior to their child’s attending. Registration is completed prior to the start of the program year for current members; newcomers’ children are accepted into the program throughout the year.
There is one registration form for Nursery aged children, kids and teens. See the box on the left to register online, or to download a printable version of the form.
Generally, our Sunday Morning Faith Formation programs meet each Sunday except for Second Sunday and a few other select dates; we follow the Boulder Valley School District calendar with regards to major holidays. In the case inclement weather requires Sunday School cancellation, please check the St. John’s Facebook Page for the most up to date information!
Our Sunday School Programs (Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Joyful Journey) will be held on the following Sundays:
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (Preschool – 6th grade)
One of our Sunday School program tracks, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd meets on most Sundays of the month, except for Second Sunday (and other select dates) from 9:15am until 10:50am from September through May. Children should have turned three by September 30 to enroll in Catechesis. Nursery care is available for younger children.
This hands-on approach to the faith formation of children is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and developmental age-appropriate educational principles. Children gather in an "atrium," a room prepared for them in size and content, a place of work and prayer that fosters the relationship between God and the child; the atrium offers opportunities for the child to listen, work, sing, pray, wonder, and respond to the Word of God at his or her own pace. The Catechists prepare an environment that “calls forth” from the child rather than “pours in” information. Catechesis responds to the child's need to "help me to know God by myself." All age levels focus on the life of Christ, the sacraments of baptism and Eucharist, and a range of parables and, in Level III, the Hebrew scriptures.
Joyful Journey (4 years old through 4th grade)
Joyful Journey is a new Sunday School program at St. John’s that runs parallel to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, from 9:30am through the end of the worship service. This one-room-school-house approach follows the Workshop Rotation Model of Sunday School. Children learn one bible story over the course of a three to four week period through several mediums: art, drama/improv, cooking, music (the list can be endless) with the idea that: (1) children learn in different ways and (2) several weeks of the same lesson solidifies a child’s grasp the story and the message.
What are some workshops we’ll be exploring this year? In addition to the workshops mentioned above—Art, Drama, Music, Cooking—we’ll also be Journeying through: Puppetry, Games, Book-Writing/Storytelling, “Newsroom”, Outreach, Scavenger Hunts and Science workshops. Finally, in addition to the main activity of each workshop, Joyful Journey will also incorporate prayer, singing and circle time.
Open Arms All Ages Childcare
There are a few Sundays throughout the school year where there is no Sunday Morning Faith Formation Programs, however, St. John’s recognizes the need for childcare during these dates. In addition to the nursery being open to children up to age 4, we also have Open Arms childcare for children 5 years old through middle school, during the 9:30 worship service.
During Open Arms, children will participate in Christian themed activities and/or in an outreach service project.
Open Arms is available on the following dates for the 2014-2015 school year:
