Choral Compline at St. John’s
“The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.” - BCP, p. 127
March 10, 2019; 9-9:40 pm, sanctuary.
Compline is a 1500-year-old tradition that developed in the early monastic communities. It is the final office of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours.
The Music Program
St. John's Music program is very blessed with a strong musical tradition, excellent resident musicians, a magnificent and expansive pipe organ, and spectacular acoustic space. We celebrate the centuries-old tradition of Anglican Music, providing support to our liturgy and celebrating the gifts of the spirit. Our music ranges from Renaissance masterpieces to the premieres of new works, composed especially for our ensembles. Our musical ensembles include the St. John's Choir, the Choristers (children's choir), the Compline Choir, the Evensong singers, and the Healing Harps ensemble.
The Music Program is under the direction of Thomas Edward Morgan, Music Director, assisted by Dr. Joyce Kull, Principal Organist, and R. Anthony Lee, Assistant Organist.
In addition to an active program supporting worship, the Music Program hosts many recitals, concerts and programs throughout the year, ranging from benefit concerts for Haiti and Cuba, performances by local ensembles such as the Ars Nova Singers, Early Music Colorado, the Renaissance Project, the annual Messiah Sing-Along, various ensembles from regional high schools and universities, organ recitals, and workshops by the Estill Voice Institute.
The St. John's Choir
Music is inextricably woven into the liturgy of St. John's Episcopal Church, and the St. John’s Choir is the center of our music program, celebrating the centuries-old tradition of Anglican music. The choir is made up of auditioned volunteer singers under the direction of Thomas Edward Morgan. The ensemble rehearses one Wednesday evening each month, as well as at 8:30am on Sunday mornings. In addition to leading the music at the 9:30am service, the choir presents special services throughout the year, including funeral and memorial services, Holy Week, Easter, and Christmas Eve.
Choristers Children's Choir
St. John’s choir director Tom Morgan leads children in song on Sunday mornings during the school year from 11:15am to noon. Areas of instruction include vocal skills, general music theory, hymns and music of the church, and the responsibilities of being in an ensemble. All children from kindergarten through fifth grade are welcome. Choristers perform on the second Sunday of the month from October through May and at the family services on Christmas Eve and Easter.
