 Principal Organist

Desired hire is the beginning of March, 2022

St. John’s Episcopal Church, an established, active Episcopal community in the heart of Boulder, has opened a search for a Principal Organist. The successful candidate will provide preludes and postludes; lead congregational singing; rehearse with and accompany the church choirs, ensembles, and soloists; oversee organ maintenance; and support the worship services with appropriate musical offerings. This part-time (~15 hours/week), salaried position is responsible for all organ music for Sunday morning worship services, Wednesday evening choir rehearsals, and additional annual and occasional worship services (e.g. Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, 2-3 Christmas Eve services, Epiphany, funerals and weddings).

Qualifications

  • Professional competency and experience in hymnody, Anglican chant, choral, and solo literature of a wide range of genres and periods that inspire congregational worship.

  • Collegial approach to ministry, serving with a highly competent, supportive music and worship team.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a church organist, preferably within the Episcopal Church.

  • Demonstrated ability in accompanying both soloists and choirs.

  • Availability to work in the U.S. under applicant’s current immigration status.

  • Advanced degrees and AGO certifications are very helpful guides to an initial understanding of a candidate’s skill level and will be taken into serious consideration.

Application Requirements

To apply, please send a cover letter expressing your interest in the position, along with your resume and the links to the video(s) described below to office@stjohnsboulder.org. Priority will be given to applications received by January 17, 2022.

Video submissions should include:

  • A recorded church service in which you perform a prelude and a postlude, and accompany hymn singing (with the time stamps at which each can be found in the recording)

OR

  • Video(s) of you playing

    • 2 pieces suitable for prelude or postlude, from different eras (Baroque, 19th century, 20th/21st century)

    • and 2 hymns, preferably one a Bach chorale

 Include a description of the instrument played in the video: all pipes, digital, or hybrid (digital with interface pipes), tracker, flat pedalboard, or other unique features.

Note: Video may be as simple as setting up a smart phone in the room. Production values are not our primary concern.
